چکیده

Three calibration campaigns of the spectrometer SPI have been performed before launch in order to determine the instrument characteristics, such as the effective detection area, the spectral resolution and the angular resolution. Absolute determination of the effective area has been obtained from simulations and measurements. At 1 MeV, the effective area is 65 cm 2 for a point source on the optical axis, the spectral resolution ∼ 2.3 keV. The angular resolution is better than 2.5 • and the source separation capability about 1 •. Some temperature dependant parameters will require permanent in-flight calibration.

SPI / INTEGRAL observation of the Cygnus region

We present the analysis of the first observations of the Cygnus region by the SPI spectrometer onboard the Integral Gamma Ray Observatory, encompassing ∼ 600 ks of data. Three sources namely Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3 and EXO 2030+375 were clearly detected. Our data illustrate the temporal variability of Cyg X-1 in the energy range from 20 keV to 300 keV. The spectral analysis shows a remarkable stabilit...

The status of the SPI energy calibration after the first year of INTEGRAL operations is reported. We have studied the gain variations and we have demonstrated that the most important parameter is the ger-manium detector temperature. This study permits us to determine the limits of our calibration method and the frequency of calibrations needed.

Dark Matter and the INTEGRAL / SPI 511 keV signal

Abstract We propose a WIMP candidate with an “excited state” 1-2 MeV above the ground state, which may be collisionally excited and de-excites by ee pair emission. By converting its kinetic energy into pairs, such a particle could produce a substantial fraction of the 511 keV line observed by INTEGRAL/SPI in the inner Milky Way. Only a small fraction of the WIMPs are above threshold, and that f...

Maximum Entropy imaging with INTEGRAL/SPI data

The application of the Maximum Entropy method for sky imaging with the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL is described. While intended primarily for extended emission, point sources are also mapped by this method. The technique is implemented as the program spiskymax in the data analysis distribution provided by the INTEGRAL Science Data Centre. We briefly introduce the method, describe the particular ...

A simultaneous solution to the calibration and the correspondence problems for spaceborne laser altimeters

Calibration of spaceborne laser altimeters over undulating topography offers some advantages compared to alternative solutions. Yet, one problem in utilizing this concept is that due to systematic and random errors it is impossible to know the location of the spot on the ground that was illuminated by the laser beam. This knowledge is mandatory to solve the calibration parameters. Several solut...
